Some of My Favorite Shots in 2009 - Raleigh Child Photography

Kaylee's mom asked for a monocolor version of this image. I like the way it works.

2008 Retrospect - FLOYDFEST!

Floydfest 2008 - A Family Affair.

I don't do big music festivals. I typically like events at Deerfields near Asheville, NC. I also like Camp Barefoot in Gore VA. So I was a bit nevous about going to Floydfest which is a bit larger. But, I had a VIP ticket and snagged a Photo pass and was looking forward to meeting an online photographer friend, Roger Gupta. Well, I was not let down. Floydfest is one of the best organized and family friendly festivals around. I got a lot of great pictures and am excited about going back this year. I'll let the pictures tell the story. 2008 Retrospect - Part 1 - February - Banff

2008 goes down in my books as one of those landmark years. There were many very good events and a few that still need to be sorted out.
For me the first big event was going to Banff, Canada, in February. I was there for a major conference on the biology of appetite and obesity. At the time, I was still working as a scientist for GlaxoSmithKline, but it was already evident that some big changes were coming. I went to Banff a couple of days before the meeting and rented a big pickup truck with 4 wheel drive. One morning I got up long before dawn and headed north along the Icefields Parkway that runs from Banff to Jasper. There were several inches of ice on the road, but since I basically had the road to myself for several hours, it wasn't a big problem. I drove for an hour or two and found a spot where the first light of dawn would strike distant mountain tops. I was able to set up my tripod in the middle of the road and get some nice shots. For breakfast and some hot coffee, I stopped at the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge at Bow Lake. After reaching Jasper, I gassed up and returned using the same route. It got quite warm that day, melting the road ice and kicking off many avalanches. Near Lake Louise, I spotted the moon rising over the mountains. On the next night there was a total lunar eclipse.

UNC CH Intramural Sports

I worked with the Admissions Office at UNC Chapel Hill last month. They are building an entirely new website. I was particularly happy with some of the shots I got with Chelsea. She's played all but one intramural sport at Carolina! Quite an accomplishment. Chelsea and her friends were all high energy and lot's of fun to work with!

Headshots

My son-in-law Dave Bell (UNC Chapel Hill) needed new headshots so we scheduled a session just before I left for Boston this week. We got to use my new Cole background and and Lumopro reflector.

I also used the opportunity to get a couples shot of Dave with my daughter Jennie. Jennie is an admissions director at UNC Chapel Hill.
(Technical: Alien Bee 1600 left of camera, AB 1600 high right for hair light, Lumopro right of camera in close)

Someone's Sister Photo Shoot

We just did a really cool concept photography shoot with Someone's Sister for their upcoming CD release. All of the images are under wraps until the CD is released. Andy Cox and I had a shoot out - Andy on Nikon and me on Canon. I have to confess...either system is great! Andy is great to have as a second photographer because he sees things differently from me and always gets the great shots.

Someone's Sister is a band centered on the work of Georgia Winfree and Katherine Jones. Their music is fantastic, but even more important is their cause, preventing child abuse. Someone’s Sister hopes to give their money away while directing the spotlight onto child abuse prevention.

You can see Someone's Sister in the Triangle area on Sept 26, 2008, at Club Steel Blue in Durham.
